I am huge in Germany. Just kidding, but I am pretty stoked to have the cover feature for the November/December 2011 issue of 20 Private Wohnträume. The magazine picked up the photos I shot for Jessica Helgerson of this Mid Century Remodel in Portland. It’s been one of my favorite shoots and the work from it has definitely been instrumental in getting my career where it is today. It’s nice to see them live on again in print. Below are the rest of the spreads. Enjoy!

UPDATE: Sad news to report. ReadyMade is folding and this will be their last issue. Best wishes to all the staff and contributers. May you find new work and many more great adventures.

I did it. After 9 years of hard work, thousands of hours of shooting, huge career highs and huge career lows, I have finally achieved one of the first goals I ever wrote down when I decided to become a photographer: I have the cover shot of a national magazine. Not only that, but the shoot is one I’m tremendously proud of and ReadyMade has been one of my top 10 editorial clients I’ve wanted to shoot for. It’s like icing on the cake.

Shot in Portland, OR, the Eyebrow House is an amazing remodel by architect Edgar Papazian of Doon Architecture. It’s curved, modern, and organic asthethic blew my mind. I’ve never seen anything quite like it (and I’ve shot a lot of houses). Edgar and his family were also really sweet and welcoming. The shoot was superbly art directed by Renda Morton of Rumors Studio and styling credit goes to the über-talented Bergren Rameson. The article was written by the brilliant Amara Holstein (who I’ve worked with many times before).

I’m often asked how did you get your break. My typical answer is usually, “I’m still waiting for it.” I feel like this assignment, though, might be that break (or at least one giant step closer). With a circulation of over 300,000, a lot of people are going to see this magazine. A portion of those people are photo editors and art buyers who I market to. Now they have something tangible to see what is possible when we work together. If you are an art buyer or photo editor reading this, I’d love to hear from you.

First tearsheet of 2011 and it’s goody! I actually shot this house in December of 2010 on a really crappy weather day. It was looked like night when we showed up and was raining really hard. Fortunately, by the time we were set up and ready to shoot, the rain lifted and clouds got brighter. Using long exposures and fill flash from my monolights, I was able to create the bright and sunny look on what was a pretty typical Portland winter day.

I’ll share a little secret with you: I actually prefer shooting interiors on cloudy days. Sunny days are a pain in the butt because the windows get too hot and I usually have to photoshop them in later. All these shots were single exposures.

For you interior design lovers, it was another fabulous project by the talented Jessica Helgerson Interior Design. They’ve just launched a new website and it features a lot of my work I shot for them over the past few years. Check it out!

Here’s the rest of the feature that ran in the February 2011 issue of Portland Monthly.

I’ve always had the philosophy that architectural photography is more interesting when you have a people in the shot. A person will give a sense of scale to the building or interior. It also helps you relate to what you’re seeing. And sometimes, it’s great just to have something to fill out the composition. In all cases, it makes the architecture feel more like a real place. It’s not always necessary to have people in the shot, but for many of my architectural clients, showing their design in use really helps them explain their aesthetic to their potential clients.

But, getting people to hold still in a natural pose for 3 to 4 seconds can be a challenge (interior exposures are always long). Often, I just let them go blurry. But there’s good blur and there’s bad blur. Getting good blur takes forethought, practice, and patience.

Here’s how I got some kids to hold still just enough for a shot at Otto Peteresen Elementary designed by DLR Group. It get’s pretty funny once they start “playing.” Who loves their clients? I do.

(video shot by the very talented Jake Stangel)

And here’s how the final shot came out.

The August 2010 issue of Portland Monthly just came out and I am really excited about this tearsheet from it. This custom built modern home, nicknamed Harpoon House, designed by Matt Kirkpatrick and Katherine Bovee has only 704 square feet of livable space. Shooting was really cool experience because it felt much larger than that. It also made the shot list really short. I think the high ceilings and big windows really helped the space feel open. It’s amazing what you can do with good design.

Matt and Katherine did a fantastic job making the most of their 2500 lot, as well. The house is only 16 feet wide and 28 feet tall and that leaves space for a garden plot and a small yard. And the upstairs bedroom has an outdoor space with a green roof. Smart and eco-friendly. I’ve included an outtake that didn’t run in the magazine after the rest of the tearsheets.

I’m pretty excited about this picture for a couple reasons. This shot feels like a good 50/50 mix of my architecture work and personal work. It’s not a literal photograph, yet it describes this place so perfectly to me. And I just think in the crumbling brick and rotting wood is so cool looking. It’s not entirely the direction I want to go with my commercial work, but it’s getting there.

I’m also exited to post my first new Ides of May photo in this new blog magazine-ish format. Since the beginning of when I started blogging, I’ve struggled to find a balance between what I want to talk about or show here and what I want to put out there first. And so, I often wouldn’t post anything to radical or unrelated to shoots, tearsheets, and so forth. In other words, it was boring.

This format solves that problem. I can blog away personal photos, opinions, gear reviews, whatever, as much as I want and then when I have a post I’m really excited about, I can make it Featured and it will show up on the blog home page.

Join me and watch this blog/website evolve. It’ll only get better with your feedback.

Thanks!

-lincoln

PS: In case you’re wondering what the hell “Ides of May” is: It was the name of my first photoblog (www.ides-of-may.com). So, all personal photographs will forever be categorized under “Ides of May”. Someday, I’ll do a book or something. Why “Ides of May”? It’s my birthday

Mahlum’s press release below:

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Oct. 20, 2009

SPRINGFIELD ELEMENTARY SCHOOL DESIGN WINS FOUR AIA AWARDS

Mahlum, in association with Robertson/Sherwood/ Architects, has won three awards from the Southwestern and Southern Oregon chapters of the American Institute of Architects for the design of two eco-friendly elementary schools in Springfield, Ore. The design also received a Merit Award from the Portland Chapter of the AIA.

In bestowing the 2009 AIA Certificate of Honor award for design of Thurston Elementary and Maple Elementary schools, the jury panel paid tribute to the contrast between “elegant refined wood detailing” in the public spaces and the large-scale exposed tilt-up concrete panels in the classroom wings. It also applauded the integration of sustainable features, responsiveness to the scale of the students themselves, and the use of wood-framed glass walls that allow the outdoor learning gardens to flow into the building.

In addition to the top Certificate of Honor, the schools received two other awards from the AIA SWO chapter – the People’s Choice Award voted on by several hundred visitors at a display during the Eugene Celebration in September and the Colleagues Choice Award voted on by chapter members. It is unusual for any project to receive all three awards from one chapter. The Honor Award is given, on average, every three years – it was last presented in 2005.

Targeted for the equivalency of a LEED Silver rating, both schools make use of natural day lighting, passive solar heat, displacement ventilation that allows classrooms individual access to outside air, and bioswales and landscaping that control storm water runoff.

The design team relied on a “kit of parts” approach that uses elements that can easily arranged to fit the topography of the sites. Construction started on both schools in May 2008 and was completed in September 2009.

The schools have sloped elevations that parallel the surrounding hills and are divided into five distinct parts – three solid elements that respond to the scale of the hills and two transparent public zones enclosed by wood-framed glass walls that connect the entry, library and commons to the courtyards.

Thurston is sited in the middle of a long narrow site that slopes up to provide a natural amphitheater at the entry. Maple is sited to create a community park around a grove of existing trees.

The Mahlum team responsible for the project included Diane Shiner, AIA, principal; Rene Berndt, AIA, project designer, and Amy Noe, IIDA, interior designer. The local architectural team from Robertson/Sherwood included Jim Robertson, AIA, and Dave Guadagni, AIA. The contractor was John Hyland Construction, of Eugene.

Springfield Public Schools, with 11,000 students, is located in Oregon’s Willamette Valley within the City of Springfield. Thurston and Maple are two of 16 elementary schools in the district. Funding for the two replacement schools was made possible by a November 2006 bond measure.

Founded in 1938, Mahlum is an architectural firm of 100 people with offices in Seattle and Portland. The firm is committed to creating enduring

architecture that enriches the human experience.

Back in my early web design days, I worked in this tiny 800 square foot office with five other guys whose ages ranged from 21 to 60. Our wood laminate desks were back to back in rows, so you felt isolated even though you were two feet away. We had a white drop ceiling with fluorescent lighting and two windows that didn’t open. It was also in a loud industrial park for a phone company. Needless to say, it was a miserable place to work, but it was my first “real” job, so what did I know.

Fast forward 11 years when I go to meet Chris Erickson at his top notch design firm’s office in the OMCC Building. My jaw just dropped. Parliament is an amazing space and I was just blown away by how cool it was. If my office looked this good back then, I would never have quit.

The space is true a reflection of Parliament’s aesthetic of quality, clean design, and superb execution. A lot of thought went behind every detail in the spaces all spearheaded by Chris’s great design sense and collaboration with master carpenter Kyle Sharp. Everything from the slat walls to the pizza oven work table was crafted with amazing amount of care and effort. I really had a great time shooting the interiors and think we got some really good stuff. Check it out:

Hot of the press, the latest issue of Portland Spaces features some beautiful interiors and furniture from Portland based designers. I had the pleasure to photograph two stories for this issue and both turned out fantastic. It also gave me a glimpse into the design scene here in Portland and I have to say it is top notch.

Jason Blackheart brilliantly art directed both of these features and he did an amazing job on the design, too. The cover shot features Andee Hess of Osmose.
