I wish these were our tomatoes. Our garden this year didn’t do too well, especially on the tomato front. It was our first summer in our new place and our garden patch was a mystery. Just a rectangular dirt patch in the backyard. We thought it would be a perfect spot for gardening. But, we think the previous owners/tenants never used it for such. Since the soil wasn’t used to growing things other than weeds, most of the starters and seeds we planted yielded very little. The tomatoes were especially sad. Next year, we’ll fertilize more. Or I might building planter boxes and fill them with really good soil.

If you happen into any local hospitality destination, you might see the above shot I took for Travel Portland. Art Directed by the incredibly talented Thomas Cobb, this slick city tour guide magazine really stands out. I know we keep them in our house for years to show out of town guests what all the great activities there are to do in the Portland area. I was really excited to shoot the cover for it and also this cool spread below.

Now, both of these shots have a lot going on. The Streetcar rolling by. Models chatting and strolling across the sidewalk. Cyclists all cruising by on my command. My timing had to be spot on because of all the moving objects and the need for negative space for copy. You’d think I would just use Photoshop to stitch the elements together later. But in one of these shots, I tweeted a little while ago that I nailed the perfect shot in one take.

Speaking of, as I was setting up the page design today, I kept humming a lyric from R.E.M.’s song “Orange Crush”. You know, the part that goes “Follow me, don’t follow me I’ve got my spine, I’ve got my orange crush” Well, I looked up the lyrics and “We are agents of the free” is in the first verse. How appropiate for all this social media stuff.

Kruger’s Crossing Cyclocross Classic – 11/26/2008

I’ve always been a big fan of racing. I shot a bordercross a few years ago and it inspired me to learn how to snowboard. After shooting this cyclocross race on Sauvie Island, it totally made me want to go out a retrofit my old Gary Fisher mountain bike for this kind of racing. Maybe this fall, you’ll see me in a helmet instead of on the sidelines.
