For much of my 18-year career, I have thought about my business as the lone photographer model. It’s been centered around just what I could do with my own hands. I’ve become an architectural and commercial photography expert and now have over 1000 shoots under my belt. I’ve shot for firms like ZGF, DLR Group, and IDL and for brands like Hunter Douglas, Rejuvenation, and Hilton.

Now that I’m 43 and looking ahead to the future of my business, I’ve decided to change the nature of what I can offer to the world. To transform the business from “I” to “We”. To work alongside a team of highly creative and talented people that will help me expand my services for the AEC and Home Decor markets I mainly serve. To grow the business beyond just my talents. To take my careful attention to detail, thoughtful preparation, and easy-going nature and scale it up, if you will.

I’ve already been doing this sort of thing by outsourcing production services like casting, prop styling, location management, and set making on larger commercial jobs. Yet, the core of my business has always been centered around making high-quality images of architecture and home decor.

Over the past year, I started to ask myself these questions: How else can I serve my clients? How can I help them with their imaging needs beyond the finished product? How can they get more value from working with me and my team? The more I asked myself these questions, the more I came back to the architectural lifecycle.

Design > Plan > Build > Deliver

What if I could offer imaging services at each of these stages? What if a client could have a consistent level of quality of imaging from a trusted partner; from someone who understands the end product as much as the beginning?

The answer to these questions came to me with two key findings:

Reality Capture

Enhanced Virtual Tours

Reality Capture is the process of using specialty cameras to scan and collect images and data of as-built conditions. These scans can be used to create enhanced virtual tours that not only allow you to virtually walk around a space but also get measurements of that space that are 97-99% accurate. In addition, the data we collect during a scan can be exported to XYZ Color Point Cloud and used in CAD workflow to create Scan to BIM outputs like schematic floor plans, elevations, a digital twin of the final project, and more.

CGI Renderings

Full CGI Rendering

With recent advances in CGI (computer-generated imaging), photo realistic renders of architecture and home decor are finally possible at an affordable price. The CGI artists we work with can take your existing CAD files or PDF Floorplans and create a beautiful lifelike 3D model of your design. For Architects and Interior Designers, these renderings can be used to help you win your projects or previsualize the finished project. For Home Decor brands, the renders can replace having to photograph prototypes and can be used in everything from brochures to advertising.

Combining these two services with my long history of architectural photography and retouching allows us to become a true full-service studio of architectural imaging. A studio dedicated to delivering the highest quality images and data for the needs of architects, interior designers, construction companies, engineers, and home decor brands.

 

Let’s take a journey together so you can see how our services all work together to benefit you.

Imagine you are working on a 10,000 sq ft interior remodeling project of a commercial building. In order to accurately estimate the project, you need it measured. Rather than go to the project and measure everything by hand, you send our Reality Capture team out to do the initial scan. Within 24 hours, we deliver to you  4K 3D virtual tour and a schematic floor plan of the as-built conditions. You feel confident in your bid because you know the costs are accurate based on the measurements taken. All your subs have looked at the space and are happy that they don’t have to visit the site in person just for a bid. You’re saving everyone time and money.

Now imagine you’ve won the job. Congrats! We can then take the original 3D Scan and convert the Point Cloud to a Revit or AutoCAD file ready for you to work on your remodel designs. Once you’re happy with your design work, you pass the file back to us and we will create a photo-realistic rendering for you. This way, if your client wants to see what furniture will look like in the space or if they want to see different options for the wall color. The renders give you and your client a clear vision of the finished project.

And now the construction phase begins. Because of your busy schedule, you can’t make it to the job site every week. Instead, you send our Reality Capture team to do weekly construction updates. You can keep an eye on the progress and discuss problems that may arise once the walls are opened up. You’ll be able to see what your contractor is seeing on-site. You can share the progress with your client and many of their questions can be answered with a quick glance rather than everyone taking time out of their day to visit the site. You can even tag points of interest like virtual blue tape for the punch list.

Finally, the remodel is complete and it’s ready to be photographed. Since we have been part of the process from the beginning, we already know the shots we’ll be taking and you won’t need to make a scouting visit. During the shoot, we will capture everything to a laptop workstation and compare the photos to the virtual tours and renderings. The final photos will be beautiful and our intimate knowledge of the project will help us capture the true spirit of the project.

After the photoshoot, we will retouch the images to enhance the look and remove distracting elements like exit signs and sprinkler heads. We will also follow up with the final scan and create a virtual tour as a gift to the client and as a record of delivery. The model can be used on your own website as a portfolio piece or a case study to pull out during presentations.

Now that is full-cycle architectural imaging.

UPDATED: Coronavirus Photoshoot Policy as of 8/3/2020

As a small business owner, I’m writing you today to let you know we take the current events of COVID-19 very seriously and want to outline what we are doing to protect you, your team, your clients, as well as myself and my team members.
 
I also understand the current economic situation may impact you in the short or long term and want to offer some flexible terms for your upcoming shoots.
 

Coronavirus Photo Policy

As of today, we can only perform shoots on assignment from media or real estate related photography (architecture, exteriors, and interiors with people at appropriate social distance.)  Here are our guidelines:
  • Photographer, crew, talent, and client must wear facemasks during the entire photoshoot. If talent is on set, talent may remove facemask as long as they are 6ft from anyone else.
  • Temperature check on set the day of shoot of all crew and clients.
  • All equipment shall be wiped down with antibacterial cleaning agent prior to use.
  • Hands washed and/or sanitized on arrival to location/set.
  • Shoes off and stored outside on all residential shoots.
  • Temporary no physical contact policy (handshakes, high fives, etc).
  • Photographer and crew must remain 6ft apart as much as possible
  • Remote art direction can occur but will limit the scope of shoot.
  • Hand washing before and after all meals and snacks.
  • Meals are to be eaten outdoors and with 6ft of space between people.
  • 24-hour cancellation fee waived if illness occurs.

Flexible Payment Terms

Because of the uncertain state of the economy, I am offering the following terms to reduce your upfront expenses on future photoshoots.

  • 12 Month Interest-Free Payment Plan – You may opt to spread the costs of a shoot over the next twelve months interest-free. After twelve months, payment is due in full or a 10% finance charge will be incurred on the balance every month.

  • 2, 5, & 10 Day Retainer Packages – If you know you have multiple shoots to do over the next year, I can create a custom retainer package and discount all fees by 20% (except travel costs).

  • Subscription Package – If you need ongoing photography, you can subscribe to a monthly service plan and pay a flat amount each month. The Monthly Subscription Fee ranges from $5000 to $500 depending on the number of shoots and usage. Feel free to contact me to set up a time to discuss.

Back to Work

The move back to Portland is complete and what a journey it’s been! Today is my first day in my home office and it feels great. Since May 20th, I’ve either been packing boxes, flying across the country with my family (including three cats), living out of suitcases in multiple AirBNBs, unpacking boxes, building furniture, or have been on location for a 9 day photo shoot for Hunter Douglas in the Bay Area. It’s been a little crazy to say the least.

I am so happy to be back and my return has been well received. On top of a long photo shoot next month for Hunter Douglas, I’ve also booked three architectural shoots this month and have had over a dozen inquiries. It’s almost like I never left.

Back to Portland Oregon

Exactly 4 years and one day after I made the announcement I was leaving Portland, OR for Charlottesville, VA I drafted this post. What makes that remarkable is that today… I am announcing that my family and I are officially moving back to Portland, OR! We’ll be back in PDX early this June of 2019.

It’s been a wild four years.

On April 4th, 2015, my wife, my mother-in-law, and I got on a United Airlines flight with a spirited 2-year-old toddler, a tiny lil’ 3 month-old-infant, and two fuzzy cats to set up life back in the town where my wife and I met. Ironically, immediately after arriving on the East Coast, I started booking lots of shoots back out on the West Coast. I instantly became a bi-coastal photographer. I continued to shoot in Oregon and California while growing my client base here in Virginia, New York, and throughout the Southeast. I’ve flown more in the past 4 years than I have in my entire life. Not mention, I nearly doubled the mileage I was driving for shoots when I was in Portland. Life has been very different since we moved to Virginia.

New beginnings

2018 was a transformative year for me and my family. We started digging into what we really want out of life and a big piece of that puzzle is where do we want to live. Though we love Charlottesville and being close to family here is super helpful, ultimately Portland is a special place to us and we feel it’s where we belong. As luck would have it, we’re actually moving back with some family; my mother-in-law has decided to join us on this next big adventure. We’re stoked!

I’m really looking forward to being based out of Portland again. If you’ve never been, I can best describe it as super friendly green city, that’s bike friendly, full of amazing parks, and brimming with hygge. Plus the food / beer / coffee scene is amazing. I’m into that kind of stuff. ????

And so, with hopeful excitement I say, “Hello again!” to Portland and with a warm heart I say “Au revoir” to dear Charlottesville.

Industrial-Chic Shoot Featured on Dwell

I’m always so excited for my clients when one of their projects I shoot for them gets published on a major industry site. Last week it was the New York Times, this week my client Emerick Architects was featured on Dwell for this amazing industrial-chic Portland warehouse they remodeled. Definitely one of those #loftgoals kinds of places. Here’s a snippet from the article:

“A Portland Craftsman, Cubed” Featured in New York Times

Ever have one of those projects that come together in a mystical kind of way? The signs are all there. The pieces fall into place just right. And you feel like you’re just meant to be there. That happened to me on this shoot for Bebee Skidmore Architects.

I first my Heidi Bebee and Doug Skidmore back in 2012 when I shot a story for Dwell in Boise, ID. They’re incredibly talented architects and their modern approach to remodeling older homes has become their signature style. And for good reason! They really have a unique vision and it’s very creative and fun.

It Gets Weird

Okay, here’s the woo woo stuff. Heidi and Doug reached out to me to photograph this project earlier this year. It had been shot already by another photographer, but they liked what I shot for them so much in that Dwell story, they wanted my take on shooting this project. (Side note: It doesn’t take much for me to want to go back to Portland. Hint. Hint. Wink. Wink.) So, when they send me the address, I notice the house is on Lincoln St. Of course it is. Then I meet the homeowners, Arrow and Jessica Kruse. My sister’s name is Jessica. Then I meet their kids, Odin and Alder. My son’s name is Odin and it’s not a very common name. Totally crazy set of coincidences! I just knew it was going to be an awesome shoot.

It Gets Better

Heidi and Doug were so excited by the photographs, that they didn’t want share them right away. Sounds counter-intuitive, right? They’re very smart and shopped the project around before posting it all over the web and what not. The New York Times picked up the story and the prolific architectural writer Brian Libby wrote a great article to go with the photos. Tips for Clients

If you have a special project that has potential for publication, DON’T put it on your website or social media right away. All the major magazines and newspapers love exclusive first rights to architecture and interior design stories. And if the photographs are shot in a well-crafted way (like the way I do), then it’s very likely that the magazine will license the photographs directly from the photographer and you find yourself in a a win-win situation. The magazine gets great images. You get great publicity. Everyone is happy.
