Tailoring Thomas – Portland Monthly November 2013

Tailoring Thomas - Portland Monthly November 2013

Here is a really cool shoot I did for last month’s issue of Portland Monthly. Thomas Lauderdale, of Pink Martini fame, has this amazing house/building right in downtown Portland. It recently went through a huge restoration and remodel led by artist and designer Philip Iosca. It’s a pretty stunning place to call home, but I could see how fun it would be live here. Thomas and Philip were both really wonderful to work with on the shoot. The three story building made for some logistical problems, but nothing you can’t fix with a pair of assistants. Art directed by Michael Novak, he used a lot of my photos for the final piece and I love the big spreads he designed. One of my finer shoots for Portland Monthly.

The rest of the spreads are below and a gallery of the images on their own. If you missed the print version, you can read it online here. Rock on!

(Note: I didn’t gray out that one ad on the bottom right because it’s one of my shots I did recently for my great client Green Hammer. Advertising and Editorial living in harmony.)

Meet Wildwood Again

Wildwood Restaurant

Wildwood Restaurant is an iconic farm to table fine dining establishment in Portland that’s recently gone through a wonderful rebirth thanks to restauranteur Cana Flug of Besaw’s fame. I first met Cana when she hired me to shoot an image library for Besaw’s. I loved the shots I got from that shoot and working with Cana was a total blast.  Needless to say, I jumped at the opportunity to shoot for her again and, once more, I absolutely love the work I got from this gig. Here are some of my favs:

JHL Design Featured in GRAY

Also from the December/January issue of GRAY, a shoot I did for JHL Design got the glossy treatment with this six page spread. The double truck kitchen shot looked killer in print. I was really happy for JHL to get published. I shot  quite  a few projects for them last year and Holly and Jasmine do excellent work. Plus, they were a lot of fun to work with. JHL Design just launched a new site and you should check it out: www.jhldesign.com

Iconic Photos of Portland for the Nike Community Store

Special slideshow post! Click on the photo to advance.

About a month ago, I was commissioned by Instrument to shoot stills alongside a film production crew on a project highlighting the remodel of the Nike Community Store on Martin Luther King Jr Blvd in Portland, OR. But this project wasn’t just another commercial gig. There’s a great story behind it.

For almost three decades, the Nike Community Store has been creating jobs, generating donations, and enlisting volunteers all to the benefit of the neighborhoods in North Portland. The store has also donated over $1.5 million dollars to community outreach programs like New Avenues for Youth and the Blazers Boys and Girls Club. The remodel of the Nike Community Store was set forth to emphasize the community mission aspect of the store. Instrument was charged with creating an original film and photography collection for the store.

I was honored to take on this project and create iconic black and white imagery that would be displayed in the store along with a video installation. The entire creative was spearheaded by Instrument and it was a blast to work with such a creative group. The slideshow above highlights some of my favorite shots from the two day shoot.

On a side note, this job was also a great opportunity to work along side with the super talented Bryce Fortner (Portlandia). He was the Director of Photography for the film side of the project and the results are fantastic. I have embedded the final film produced by Instrument below

Now when need to go by your next pair of running shoes, head out to Nike Community Store and support a good cause.

Portland Monthly July 2011 – Season’s Eatings

Man, do I love shooting food. I love it almost as much as eating it. And I feel really lucky because there’s no shortage of truly great food in Portland. In fact, the most difficult thing about food here is deciding what to eat. That’s why this story by Allison Jones was so great to photograph. It’s only a small sampling of the food choices here, but these 10 dishes were all so good that I would shoot this story over again in a heartbeat.

The tricky part of this shoot was getting everything to go together in layout. Jason Blackheart’s art direction was key in dealing with the various angles, shapes, and sizes of food. His goal was to keep it simple and about the food. We decided early on that we couldn’t shoot this in studio, but wanted to make it look like it was. It was going to be too challenging to set up a traditional table top setup inside all these restaurants, so Jason’s solution was to go light and shoot everything on white foam core. To keep the lighting consistent, we always shot with natural window light coming always from the right. My processing did the rest and the spread looks fantastic. One of my favorites this year.
